About this course

For returning students who have completed Darbuka Advanced. Complex polyrhythms, solo and improvisation over recorded and live music, accents and dynamics, ‘Hiwa’ ornamentation and right-hand Mahbus.

What you'll cover

A continuation course for students who have already completed Darbuka Advanced. The material deliberately overlaps — complex polyrhythms, 'Hiwa' ornamentation, right-hand Mahbus — but the tempos are higher and less is explained twice.
The new emphasis is accents and dynamics. At this level the difference between two drummers playing the same rhythm lies entirely in which strokes they lean on, and in how quietly they can play when the music asks for it.
You solo and improvise over both recorded and live music. Live is much the harder of the two: nothing is repeatable, and you are responding to musicians who are making decisions of their own.
The class runs on Wednesdays from 7:00 pm.

Places are limited to eight to twelve students. Enrolment opens on the open day and closes when the class is full.

If you're unsure whether this is the right level, we're happy to arrange a fifteen-minute conversation to place you correctly.
