About this course
For students who have completed Darbuka Beginners. New complex rhythms, sound equality, tempo and hand coordination. Humming or singing along while keeping time on the drum.
What you'll cover
Three things get worked on here that a beginners' class cannot reach. Sound equality — every doum identical, every tak identical, in both hands, at any speed. Tempo — holding one without drifting, and changing it on purpose. Hand coordination — the left hand doing something other than following the right.
On top of that come new and more complex rhythms than the five you arrived with.
The unusual part of the term is the singing. You learn to hum or sing a melody while keeping the rhythm going underneath it. It feels impossible in week one, and it is the exercise that most reliably makes people better drummers, because it forces the rhythm to become automatic instead of occupying your attention.
Darbuka Beginners is the way in. Darbuka Upper Intermediate, later the same evening on Thursdays, is the way on.
Places are limited to eight to twelve students. Enrolment opens on the open day and closes when the class is full.
If you're unsure whether this is the right level, we're happy to arrange a fifteen-minute conversation to place you correctly.
