Oud Ensemble I
New maqamaat that will be covered in this course include: Nahawand, Kurd, Lami, Bayat and Maqam Bayat Shor. You will also learn new techniques using the second octave and some ornamentation.
This course is designed for students who are interested in improving their Oud ornamentation techniques and to extend their knowledge of the maqam system. In order to enroll for the Oud Ensemble course, it is required to have attended an Oud Intermediate course or to be comfortable with previously covered material and have your own instrument. Students with existing knowledge may apply but must be assessed by a teacher. Please contact: school@taqasim.net for an assessment.
Students need to allocate time for daily practice and study. This course consists of 10 lessons of 2 hours each. The maximum number of students is 7. Lessons are taught on a weekly basis.

What you'll cover
Ensemble I covers similar maqam ground to Oud Upper Intermediate — Nahawand, Kurd, Lami, Bayat and Maqam Bayat Shor, with second-octave technique and ornamentation — but the point of this course is playing together rather than playing well alone.
Seven students maximum. That is not a scarcity tactic: it is the largest group in which everyone can still be heard individually and corrected in the room. You learn to hold your own line against other players, to match ornamentation across the group, and to keep pulse without a drum carrying you.
Entry needs the Oud Intermediate course, or material you are genuinely fluent in. Students who have learned elsewhere are welcome to apply but must be assessed first — write to school@taqasim.net and a teacher will arrange it.
Ten lessons of two hours, weekly. Expect to practise daily between them; ensemble playing exposes the gaps that solo practice hides.
Enrolment opens on the open day and closes when the class is full.
