What you'll cover
Five maqamaat get close attention this term: Ajam, Hijaz, Hijaz Kar, Rast and Suznak. Each is studied through traditional repertoire, so you meet it as music before you meet it as a diagram.
The technical work runs in parallel. Right-hand technique, left-hand positions and two-octave scales are what decide whether those maqamaat are playable in tune and at speed, so they are drilled deliberately rather than left to improve on their own.
This course expects daily practice — not long sessions, but daily ones. Students who save it all for one block at the weekend tend to stall around week five.
Oud Upper Beginner is the usual way in. Oud Upper Intermediate, on Sunday afternoons, is the usual way on.
Places are limited to eight to twelve students. Enrolment opens on the open day and closes when the class is full.
