What you'll cover
New ground: Nahawand, Kurd, Lami, Bayat and Maqam Bayat Shor. Lami and Bayat Shor in particular are where the maqam system stops being a list of scales and starts being a set of routes between them.
The technical focus moves up the neck. You work in the second octave, where there are no frets to help and intonation is entirely your ear's problem, and you begin the ornamentation that separates a correct performance from a convincing one.
Daily practice is assumed rather than encouraged — there is more material here than a weekly two-hour class can carry on its own.
You do not need to have taken Oud Intermediate with us, but you do need to be comfortable with its material; ask for an assessment if you are unsure. This is the solo, technique-led course. If you would rather work on the same maqamaat in a group, playing with other people, that is Oud Ensemble I on Sunday evenings — some students take both.
Places are limited to eight to twelve students. Enrolment opens on the open day and closes when the class is full.
